Problem

invoke_model with a plain model ID fails with this error for newer Claude models.

Error (redacted / normalized)

ValidationException ... Invocation of model ID anthropic.claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022-v2:0 with on-demand throughput isn't supported. Retry your request with the ID or ARN of an inference profile that contains this model.

Not this when / boundary

You use provisioned throughput, or the error is an access-denied error. (our inference: tools like Claude Code on Bedrock need the profile ID in their model setting too.)

Root cause

These models can only be called on demand through an inference profile (cross-region), not by bare model ID.

Fix

  1. Run aws bedrock list-inference-profiles and find the profile for your model (for example us.anthropic.claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022-v2:0).
  2. Pass that profile ID (or its ARN) as modelId.
  3. Make sure model access is enabled for your account in the Bedrock console (an answer).

How to verify

The same call returns a response.
