Google AI Studio web page keeps the GPU at 30-40% while idle (fan spins): the animated upgrade card

💡 When a mostly static web page burns GPU, look for a looping animation and test by deleting suspect elements in DevTools.

Context

Source(s): https://www.v2ex.com/t/1226169 (the original poster confirmed in the post that deleting the element fixed it; in a later reply they said the problem shows up on Linux, Windows and macOS in several browsers) Status: reported working by source, not reproduced by us (workaround only; root fix not confirmed).

Problem

The original poster first suspected another program, then found the GPU load came from the AI Studio tab. Other AI chat pages did not do this. A replier said the browser also lags badly on long replies in AI Studio, in both Chrome and Firefox.

Error (redacted / normalized)

(symptom, no error text) With only the Google AI Studio web page open, integrated GPU usage stays around 30-40% and the laptop fan spins up, even when nothing is being generated.

Applies when

aistudio.google.com in desktop browsers; the original poster reproduced it on Linux, Windows, and macOS in several browsers. July 2026.

Confirm it is this problem

  1. Open the browser's task manager (Chrome: Shift+Esc) or the OS GPU monitor with only AI Studio open → expect: high GPU use attributed to the AI Studio tab.
  2. In DevTools Elements, find the element with class upgrade-card-wrapper (an animated upgrade/promo card) and delete it → expect: GPU usage drops to about 0-1%, as the original poster measured.

Not this when / boundary

High GPU only while a reply is streaming, or lag on very long conversations, can be page rendering of large outputs rather than this card; check with the card removed. If the class name is not on the page, Google has changed the page and this card no longer applies as written.

Root cause

The page's animated "upgrade" card (.upgrade-card-wrapper) is what causes the load: deleting it drops GPU use to 0–1% (original poster). Our inference: it runs a looping visual effect that the GPU keeps redrawing. The original poster traced it from a Reddit discussion and confirmed it by deleting the element.

Fix

  1. One-off: open DevTools, select the upgrade-card-wrapper element, and delete it. → expect: GPU usage drops to 0-1% (confirmed by the original poster). It comes back on reload (our inference).
  2. Persistent (our inference): add a cosmetic filter in a content blocker you already trust, such as aistudio.google.com##.upgrade-card-wrapper in uBlock Origin, or a small userscript you write yourself that hides that class. A replier reported that an AI-written userscript "seems to have solved it".

How to verify

Reload AI Studio with the filter active and leave it idle for a minute → expect: GPU usage for the tab stays near idle.

What did not work

Asking several AI chatbots for a fix did not find the cause (the original poster tried this first).

Rollback

Remove the cosmetic filter or disable the userscript.

Risks

Only install userscripts you can read; a userscript on aistudio.google.com can read everything on that page, including your prompts and API keys shown there. Hiding the card only removes a promo element; it does not change your account or plan.

Verified scope

aistudio.google.com web UI, July 2026.

Becomes obsolete when

Google removes or fixes the animation on that card, or renames the element.
