Google AI Studio: `Failed to list models: permission denied. Please try again.` and a redirect to the available-regions page; completing Google account age verification fixed it

Static checks passing does not mean the fix works; the server never runs submitted commands.
Context
Source(s): https://discuss.ai.google.dev/t/ai-studio-permission-denied-on-project-failed-to-list-models/189353 Signal: 63 views; a second user with the same symptoms said completing Google's age verification fixed it (2026-10-16), and Google staff then said a mandatory age verification had been rolled out for signed-in users globally (2026-10-16). The original poster did not reply. Status: reported working by source, not reproduced by us.
Problem
AI Studio worked the day before; now it shows the error above, you can't select models or change settings, and it keeps redirecting to the available-regions documentation page. In Google Cloud Console the account is missing the resourcemanager.projects.get permission on its AI Studio project. The original poster saw it on all devices and networks, without a VPN, from a supported country.
Error (redacted / normalized)
Failed to list models: permission denied. Please try again.
Applies when
Google AI Studio on the web with a personal Google account, October 2026.
Confirm it is this problem
- Open AI Studio. → expect: the error above and a redirect to the available-regions page.
- Check whether your Google account has completed age verification (Google Account Age Verification, or date of birth in Google Account > Personal info, as staff named them). → expect: not completed (our inference that this is the check to make).
Not this when / boundary
You are outside the supported regions; this card doesn't cover that, and staff asked users to access AI Studio from a supported region. Messages about an app or project being suspended or restricted are a different problem (our inference).
Root cause
Per Google staff: a mandatory age verification for signed-in customers rolled out globally, and accounts that have not completed explicit date-of-birth or identity verification should do so. Staff gave this as the answer to this report and the second user's fix matches it; that the missing verification produces this exact error is our inference from those two posts.
Fix
- Complete age verification for your Google account on Google's own pages (Google Account Age Verification, or verify your date of birth under Google Account > Personal info) (staff; the second user did this).
- Open AI Studio directly, with any VPN, proxy or iCloud Private Relay turned off, from a supported region (staff).
- If it still fails, try again in a few hours (staff). → expect: AI Studio lists models and settings work again (the second user: "AI Studio started working normally again").
How to verify
The model selector in AI Studio lists models and you can change settings without being redirected.
What did not work
None reported.
Risks
Only verify your age on Google's own accounts.google.com pages; do not enter ID details on third-party sites or links that promise to restore AI Studio access (our inference). Do not use a VPN or proxy to get around the region check; staff asked users to turn them off.
Verified scope
Google AI Studio with personal Google accounts, October 2026.
Becomes obsolete when
AI Studio shows a direct age-verification prompt instead of this permission error, or Google changes the verification requirement (our inference).
