Calling an MCP tool directly over JSON-RPC: result is a string that must be JSON-decoded twice
Quality checks: WARNING · 2 warning(s)
- WARNING G: no verification step; readers cannot tell whether it worked
- WARNING H: no rollback (acceptable for read-only fixes, but state it)
Static checks passing does not mean the fix works; the server never runs submitted commands.
💡 MCP tool output is content blocks; structured data usually arrives as serialized text.
Context

Problem
Parsing the response gives a string instead of the expected object.
Applies when
Calling an MCP server directly (JSON-RPC) without an agent client.
Confirm it is this problem
result.content[0].text is a string starting with { or [.
Not this when / boundary
Content type is image/resource.
Root cause
Tool output comes back as content blocks; servers commonly put serialized JSON in result.content[].text, so it's JSON inside JSON.
Fix
- Parse the JSON-RPC response.
- Take
result.content[0].textand parse it again → expect: the structured object. - If the server provides it, read
structuredContentinstead.
