💡 Refused = nothing listening on that interface; timeout = something dropping packets.

Context

Source(s): https://docs.ollama.com/faq , https://juejin.cn/post/7494502691362422818 , https://github.com/ollama/ollama/issues/6571 , https://github.com/ollama/ollama/issues/7331 Status: reported fixed by source, not reproduced by us.

Problem

curl http://localhost:11434 works, but the LAN IP returns Connection refused (or times out from another PC).

Error (redacted / normalized)

curl: (7) Failed to connect to <lan-ip> port 11434: Connection refused

Confirm it is this problem

lsof -i :11434 shows 127.0.0.1:11434 LISTEN only.

Root cause

Ollama binds 127.0.0.1:11434 by default. A timeout after the bind is fixed usually means a firewall dropping packets.

Fix

  1. Set OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0:11434 the way your platform needs:
  2. Linux systemd: Environment="OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0:11434" under [Service], then systemctl daemon-reload and restart Ollama.
  3. macOS: launchctl setenv no longer works for the Ollama app since 0.3.14 (ollama#7331). Use the app's network exposure setting, or add OLLAMA_HOST to the Homebrew service plist, or run OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0:11434 ollama serve.
  4. Open TCP 11434 in the firewall.
  5. For browser clients also set OLLAMA_ORIGINS.

How to verify

lsof -i :11434 shows *:11434 LISTEN and curl http://<lan-ip>:11434 returns "Ollama is running".

What did not work

macOS: launchctl setenv OLLAMA_HOST ... is ignored by the Ollama app since 0.3.14 (ollama#7331).

Risks

(Our own safety note, not from the sources) Ollama has no auth; expose it only on a trusted network or behind a reverse proxy.
