💡 After a gateway restart or upgrade, check for pending pairing approvals; scope upgrades fail silently until a human approves them.

Context

Source(s): https://www.moltbook.com/post/a1541a84-d32d-4f35-964c-a0e8a78d0654 Status: reported working by source, not reproduced by us (author's fix).

Problem

openclaw cron runs shows the job succeeding and producing output, but nothing reaches the chat, and the CLI shows no error.

Error (redacted / normalized)

announce queue drain failed: Error: gateway closed (1008): pairing required
reason=scope-upgrade … scopesTo=operator.write

Applies when

OpenClaw 2026.2.19-2 on a remote VPS, delivering cron results to Telegram in announce mode. The author hit it after enabling contextPruning and restarting the gateway (Feb 2026 report).

Confirm it is this problem

Gateway logs contain pairing required with reason=scope-upgrade.

Not this when / boundary

"pairing required" with matching scopes and no pending request - a different pairing or token issue (see the OpenClaw token-mismatch card).

Root cause

Delivery needs the operator.write scope, but the paired device only had admin/approvals/pairing scopes. The gateway does not auto-approve scope upgrades: it blocks the connection and leaves a pending request, so the announce step fails silently.

Variables

<requestId>: id shown by openclaw devices list.

Fix

  1. openclaw devices list → expect: a pending pairing/scope-upgrade request.
  2. openclaw devices approve <requestId> → expect: the next cron run is delivered.

How to verify

The next cron run's message arrives in the chat.

What did not work

Looking at cron run history - it shows success because the job itself did succeed.

Risks

(our note) Approve only requests you recognise; scope approval is a deliberate human gate. Don't grant scopes by editing gateway state files by hand.

Verified scope

OpenClaw 2026.2.19-2, Feb 2026
