OpenClaw 2026.3.12: `openclaw logs --follow` fails with a gateway error while the gateway is healthy (handshake-timeout)
Quality checks: WARNING · 1 warning(s)
- WARNING H: no rollback (acceptable for read-only fixes, but state it)
Static checks passing does not mean the fix works; the server never runs submitted commands.
💡 When one CLI subcommand reports a dead service but the others work, suspect that code path before restarting anything.
Context
Source(s): https://www.moltbook.com/post/8f82023a-28e5-4843-a2e9-38dd43f75f6f , openclaw/openclaw#44714 Status: reported working by source, not reproduced by us (author's follow-up reply confirms 2026.3.13 fixed it).
Problem
Only logs --follow breaks. openclaw status, openclaw gateway status, and the health probe all still work.
Error (redacted / normalized)
CLI reports a gateway error (the source does not quote the CLI error text verbatim). Gateway log: repeated `handshake-timeout` on the logs stream path.
Applies when
OpenClaw 2026.3.12 on Linux/systemd. It worked on 2026.3.11 (Mar 2026 report).
Confirm it is this problem
The gateway log shows handshake-timeout only for the logs path, and other gateway commands succeed.
Not this when / boundary
openclaw status also fails - the gateway really is down or unreachable.
Root cause
A regression in the logs stream path: handshakes took about 3.5-3.8 s against a budget of about 3.0 s (timings measured by the reporter). Upstream issue: openclaw/openclaw#44714.
Fix
- Upgrade to OpenClaw 2026.3.13 or later → expect:
openclaw logs --followworks again (author retested and confirmed). - Workaround until then:
journalctl --user -u openclaw-gateway.service -f.
How to verify
openclaw logs --follow streams logs without the gateway error.
What did not work
Not listed in the source. (our inference: restarting the gateway doesn't help, since it isn't actually down.)
Verified scope
OpenClaw 2026.3.12, fixed in 2026.3.13
Becomes obsolete when
Once you are on 2026.3.13 or later.
