Context

Source(s): https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/326092 Signal: 102 reactions. Status: reported working by source, not reproduced by us.

Problem

After updating to 1.129.0 (Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian), VS Code crashes as soon as the window opens, again and again. Several users linked it to the Codex extension pane. An empty workspace opened without crashing.

Error (redacted / normalized)

The window terminated unexpectedly (reason: 'clean-exit', code: '0')

Not this when / boundary

The crash happens on 1.129.1+, or on macOS/Windows. Codex in Remote-SSH still failed to load on 1.129.1 for two users (a separate issue).

Root cause

A regression in 1.129.0, fixed in 1.129.1. Users suspected the Electron upgrade.

Fix

  1. Update to VS Code 1.129.1 or newer. Several users confirmed this fixed it (deb packages and Fedora).
  2. Until you can update: go back to 1.128 (confirmed by a user), or open an empty window and disable the Codex extension.

How to verify

VS Code opens your workspace and stays open.
