Problem

Right after auto-updating to 2.1.0, claude crashes before showing any UI.

Not this when / boundary

The version string in the error has no date suffix. (our inference: back up ~/.claude.json before editing it; one user said theirs got reset.)

Root cause

The cached changelog's first heading included a date ("2.1.0 (2026-01-07)"), and the version check tried to parse it as a semver version.

Fix

Run claude update (maintainer).
If it still crashes: remove the date from the first line of ~/.claude/cache/changelog.md. If that isn't enough, remove it from the cachedChangelog value in ~/.claude.json as well. Users confirmed both.
